These scams involve the sale of fake medical marijuana cards, which are often sold online or through underground channels. These cards purport to grant the holder legal access to medical marijuana, but they are usually invalid and provide no actual legal protection. In some cases, the individuals selling these fake cards may also ask for personal information, such as a social security number or medical records, which can be used for identity theft. In addition to the legal risks, fake medical marijuana cards can also pose a risk to the user's health. Some individuals may purchase subpar or potentially dangerous products marketed as medical marijuana, which can contain contaminants or very low levels of active ingredients. These products may be ineffective as a treatment option and may even be harmful to the user. To avoid falling victim to medical cannabis card scams, individuals in Kentucky should be aware of the conditions of qualifications in the Governor's Executive Order on Medical Cannabis and should only obtain medical marijuana from legitimate out-of-state legal dispensaries. It is also important to be wary of offers for discounted or "fast track" medical and to not provide personal information to anyone offering a card. While the availability of medical marijuana can provide relief to individuals suffering from certain conditions, it is important to obtain it legally and safely to avoid the risks associated with scams and illegal possession. Qualifying patients in Kentucky should also keep the original receipts and packaging for product purchased in legal out-of-state markets in order to adhere to the Governor's Executive Order.
