CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Kentucky's medical marijuana program has taken a significant step forward with the awarding of the first processing and cultivation licenses.
These licenses will allow selected facilities to grow cannabis and process it into products such as gummies.
The state employed the Kentucky Lottery to randomly select the license winners, aiming for fairness in the process. Among the winners, two cultivators from Northern Kentucky were chosen, one located in Bracken County and the other in Grant County.
Matthew Bratcher, executive director of Kentucky NORML, a group advocating for the decriminalization of marijuana laws, expressed optimism about the program's progress.
"I think everybody's really, you know, looking forward to you seeing this rollout. Everything seems to be going fantastic so far. I commend the office for medical cannabis for everything that they've done for this process," said Bratcher.
In total, only 48 dispensary licenses will be issued across the state, with just four allocated to the nine-county Northern Kentucky region.
The state has received more than 50 license applications from Northern Kentucky and over 4,000 statewide.
