Welcome to the Renaissance of Hope, Kentucky

May I start this by saying, congratulations Kentucky for the progress made in cannabis. I had the pleasure of attending the Kentucky NORML conference last year with my nonprofit, Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law and have been watching and cheering for you all from here in Virginia. Welcome to the renaissance!

Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law (501c3) has been helping people tell their cannabis criminalization stories since 2018. You can read these stories at cruelconsequences.org or in our first book, The Human Cost of Marijuana Prohibition. See link on our website or Instagram @cruelconsequences

Since visiting Kentucky last year, my newest book, Humans of Cannabis in a Renaissance of Hope, was released and is now available on Amazon.

I wrote this book to mark this time when society is evolving in how we understand, use, and regulate cannabis, speaking to this transformative moment.

At the heart of Humans of Cannabis in a Renaissance of Hope are the voices of people who have found relief, resilience, and empowerment through cannabis. Each of the over 50 stories in this book, including NORML founder, Keith Stroup, and JM Pedini, Development Director of NORML and many other advocates, entrepreneurs, and patients, highlights the deeply personal journeys of those who’ve advocated and turned to cannabis for their health, healing, or hope. For many, cannabis isn’t just a plant; it’s a symbol of freedom from pain, anxiety, stigma, and social injustice. This book would make a great gift for that cannabis enthusiast you know. It’s full of inspirational stories!

Get Involved in a Renaissance of Hope

The journey of understanding cannabis is ongoing. Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law made an attempt last year to look for Kentucky injustice cannabis stories, but I feel it may have been too early. I was reminded of what it was like before medical cannabis in Virginia and understand the fear of retribution holds people back from sharing their story. I would like to try again and invite those who have been criminalized for cannabis in Kentucky to become part of this cultural shift, helping to rewrite the narrative around cannabis in America and beyond by allowing cruelconsequences.org to tell your story. We are looking for stories of those who have been denied employment, housing, education, or child custody because of cannabis. Visit this link to apply - https://forms.gle/RnMXy2id3Apt43QP8

Cruel Consequences has always stood for a community that believes in the potential of compassion, awareness, and change for cannabis. By sharing your cannabis criminalization story, you could inspire more change in Kentucky’s renaissance of hope towards more cannabis law reform.

Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law

The Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law traveling exhibit was founded in 2018 by Tamara Netzel. Netzel became a medical cannabis advocate after finding relief for her Multiple Sclerosis symptoms. She was a middle school English and Civics teacher for 16 years before liver failure from her MS meds caused daily excruciating chronic pain. A friend suggested she try cannabis oil.

She joined Virginia NORML and a group of moms whose children have Epilepsy who had been fighting for medical cannabis for years in hopes of legalizing medical cannabis for herself and other patients.
