Kentucky will soon have operating medical marijuana dispensaries, but some lawmakers are raising concerns about certain products looking too much like candy rather than medicine.

Medical marijuana has reached another milestone in Kentucky, further pushing forward the process of cultivating cannabis in the state. Officials said this opens up a future for Kentuckians where health care is more available to those suffering, and communities can be safer.

Governor Andy Beshear said while licensed operators are already growing safe medical cannabis in the state, Kentucky is about to grow a whole lot more.

While we are relieved to hear that no Kentucky residents appear to have been affected, this situation is a reminder of why transparency, accountability, and stronger protections are essential in the medical cannabis space.

“It takes a while to get an industry from the ground up,” Bratcher explained. “A lot of places have had to break ground and build from the ground up rather than retrofit buildings. So, it’s been expected that it would take kind of this long to get things going.”

A 4 part series of Medical Cannabis Patient Registration Fairs will take place across Kentucky in August and September, helping eligible patients connect with certified physicians and complete evaluations required to participate in Kentucky’s new medical cannabis program.

In a recent op-ed titled “We can grow hemp and protect kids at the same time,” Senator Mitch McConnell, widely recognized as the architect of the 2018 Farm Bill’s hemp legalization, reiterates his support for tightening federal laws around intoxicating hemp-derived products. His position is clear: the proliferation of unregulated cannabinoids like Delta-8 has led to an industry operating in legal gray zones, and children are at risk.

Last week, Kentucky NORML hit the road for a three-day stop at the Alternative Products Expo at The Fairgrounds in Nashville—and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

As solo vendors at the event, we set up shop with a booth full of fundraising items generously donated by supporters, along with materials highlighting our upcoming Patient Registration Fairs across Kentucky.

Lucky Leaf Expo is in the books—and this one felt extra special. Louisville played host May 29–31, and Kentucky NORML came in strong, from the classroom to the expo floor and everywhere in between.
